Advise on geotechnical hazards, investigation and stabilisation options for abandonned shallow mine workings beneath proposed canal tunnel route.

Dublin Gas Pipeline, Republic of Ireland.
Site inspection and review of SI data and encountered ground conditions for seven 1.0m to 1.5m diameter tunnelled road/rail/river and canal crossings for a 900mm diameter, 18.6Km gas transmission pipeline. Tunnelling methods comprised; anger boring, manual pipejacking, (drill & blast, and hand excavation) and three microtunnels.  Produced report for claim relating to unforeseen ground conditions.

Birches Head Sewer Scheme, Stoke
Tender geotechnical interpretation of site investigation data for proposed 1.0 Km, 2.8m diameter sewer tunnel in coal measures.  Advised on geotechnical risks and produced probabilstic model of roadheader excavation rates.

Dock Road Tunnel, Limerick Main Drainage Scheme, Republic of Ireland.
Tender review of ground conditions for a 2.5 Km, 3.0m diameter sewer tunnel in soft ground, mixed face and very strong Limestone.  Advise on geotechnical risks, excavation method selection, blasting and temporary works, programme estimates, and site monitoring. .

London Underground Limited
Performed probabilistic analysis to determine the likely cause of defects in a section of cast-iron tunnel lining. This included the comprehensive review of a large number of variables relating to; material properties, geology, construction, and the history of the site, and probabilistic implementation of analytical models for selected failure mechanisms.

Site Investigation, Limerick Main Drainage Scheme 

Provision of Resident Engineer/site geotechnical staff for supervision of site investigation for this project which includes 1.8 km of 3.0m diameter tunnel, 10 No. shafts, 3No. crossings of the river Shannon , a 40m diameter shaft for a pumping station,  and 30 km of open cut  trench excavations, up to 6.0m deep. Ground conditions ranged from alluvial clays to very strong limestone.

Unsaturated Zone Test Facility, Busted Butte, Nevada Test Site
Support design for access tunnels and underground test rooms at shallow depth in weak massive tuffs; rock support design and rockfall hazard analysis for portal zone.

Jersey Stormwater Project
Development of probabilistic foreseeability models for geotechnical conditions along 1000m of tunnel in granophyre, diorite, gabbro and metasediments.  Including review of site investigation data, development of probability distributions of geotechnical parameters, and production of probabilistic longitudinal tunnel profiles. Analysis of geotechnical data obtained during construction, and comparison of encountered ground conditions with site investigation interpretation; technical support for the preparation of Clause 12 submissions.  Simulation modelling of TBM and raisebore excavation systems to quantify the effects of unforeseen ground conditions.

Plymouth Sewage Treatment Scheme
Provision of site geotechnical staff for the Contractor during tunnel construction.  Face mapping in line with excavation on up to 7 No. faces, collection and analysis of geotechnical data.  Comparison of encountered ground conditions with site investigation interpretation; technical support for the preparation of Clause 12 submissions.

Ramsgate Harbour Approach Tunnel
Review of calculations  for potential settlement during excavation of a 11.0m diameter tunnel in chalk with relatively low cover.  Report assessed the  validity  of the methods initially adopted for analysis, and reassessed the calculations in light of the proposed tunnelling method.

Nirex RCF Science Contract, GIGA Joint Venture
Sub-contractor to GIGA JV on Sellafield RCF Science Contract.  Responsible for production of in-shaft rock-mechanics testing and monitoring documentation, including;  instrument specification; design of instrument array layouts; preparation of detailed technical procedures for in-situ stress measurement, extensometer installation and coupled hydro-mechanical instruments.

Dover and Folkestone Wastewater Transfer Tunnel
Alternative design for a 3m diameter 1500m long waste water transfer tunnel in chalk on behalf of the works contractors.

Alki CSO Project, Seattle, USA.
Advice to contractor on TBM performance and settlement related issues for a 13ft diameter 10,000 ft long sewerage tunnel to be constructed by a full face EPBM machine.

Blast Design and Optimisation,  Pongkor Gold Project, Indonesia
Design of development access tunnels to extend the existing gold mine to exploit a new orebody.  Design, field monitoring and optimisation of stope and development blasts.  Engineering and financial risk analysis.

Sellafield Rock Characterisation Facility, UK Nirex Ltd
Technical support to UK Nirex Ltd in connection with the proposed Rock Characterisation Facility, Sellafield, Cumbria.  Advice on development of the underground geotechnical and rock mechanics testing programme, including instrumentation systems, automated data acquisition, test design, and technical procedures;  project management and contractual issues for the science activities and related support;  programme cost and schedule estimates; input to public inquiry evidence.

Tunnelling Risk Analysis Research, Transport Research Laboratory / UK Dept. of Transport 
Undertaking a research contract on potential applications of engineering and financial risk analysis in highway tunnelling projects including a review of available methods; development of financial risk models from technical or engineering risk models; data elicitation techniques; and development of practical guidelines for the implementation of these methods. 

A27 Worthing to Lancing Improvement and Lancing By-pass
Technical feasibility studies, cost estimates and financial risk analysis for three potential NATM tunnel alignments in chalk, proposed as alternatives to the published route.  Project involved probabilistic modelling geotechnical and hydrogeological conditions on each alignment, including specific geological hazards; quantification of uncertainty in unit prices, ground support types and quantities; excavation sequencing; and achievable progress rates.

Southport Sewage Treatment Works (Deep Shaft)
Estimation of halite creep rates and long-term creep loading of the shaft concrete lining, using empirical creep laws and rheological modelling methods in combination with ground-support interaction analysis.

Blast Vibration Monitoring Training, Turkey
Presented short course on the prediction and monitoring of blast vibrations from construction and quarrying activities, for engineers of the Turkish government authority responsible for dams.  This project included an overview of blasting techniques used in construction and quarrying;  assessment of blast patterns to obtain parameters for use in vibration prediction;  vibration propagation and detection;  predictive methods including far-field and near-field site laws; damage thresholds; and field training in use of instruments and data analysis.

Crossrail Project Liverpool Street Station
Input to detailed design for proposed NATM excavations for Liverpool Street CrossRail station.

Assessment of tunnel-related settlement impacts, City Of Westminster
Qualitative assessment of  potential impacts of tunnel-induced settlement on several surface and underground structures within the City of Westminster.  Project included a detailed analysis of settlement data from the Heathrow NATM Trial Tunnel to assess its applicability to central London sites.

New York Low-Level Radioactive Waste Project
Design and cost estimates for a 200 acre underground low-level radioactive waste repository for New York state.  This project has involved development of design criteria for surface and underground facilities; compilation of design data; conceptual designs for five candidate sites; evaluation of long-term stability and longevity of construction materials; industrial safety and dose rate analysis; and preparation of detailed cost estimates.

Yucca Mountain Project, Nevada, USA
Technical support to Los Alamos National Laboratory Yucca Mountain Project Test Co-ordination Office (TCO), including;

Technical   review of   design  packages  for  drill  and blast  starter  tunnel and  TBM excavation; rockmass  monitoring and  analysis of geological  data collected during starter tunnel excavation; tunnel stability and rock support analysis.

Technical  input to  geotechnical data  collection requirements and  tunnel / geotechnical as-built records. Prepared technical memoranda on geological mapping.
