SubTerra  Engineering offers  a  range  of  services related to rockfall hazard analysis and control using sophisticated modelling and risk analysis techniques.

This approach enables problem areas to be identified with confidence so that resources are targeted only where required.  The result is a cost effective control programme which can minimise visual intrusion in environmentally sensitive locations.

Our experience in this field includes assessments for highways, tunnel portals, mines, quarries, and residential developments.

Specific services include;

Rockfall Source Area Assessment
Geotechnical  assessment  of  rockfall  source areas, in terms of block size distribution, block geometry and stability. Other significant factors considered include seasonal variations in  weather,  vegetation cover  and  aspect, and historical information on rockfalls.

Rockfall Pathway Assessment
Assessment of rockfall pathways in terms of topography, surface roughness, frictional and restitution coefficients, & statistical parameterisation of these variables.

Simulation Modelling & Risk Analysis
Two or three dimensional rockfall simulation for  specified  source  areas.   SubTerra  Engineering uses a range of software packages for risk and hazard analysis.

Rockfall hazard analysis is generally carried out using the Colorado Rockfall Simulation Program (CRSP3) with an in-house package for slopes of complex geometry.

Outputs include probability distributions of block size, velocity and height at any specified target on or below the slope.  This information can be used directly in the design of barriers, fences, catch ditches, or other protection measures.

Rockfall simulation can be used as a screening tool, enabling long lengths of slope to be assessed rapidly and cost effectively, ensuring that resources in the form of rockfall control or mitigation measures, are focused where needed most.

Rockfall Hazard Mapping
Production of rockfall hazard maps contoured at specified probabilistic risk levels, to identify areas requiring protective measures.

Rockfall Control and Mitigation Measures
As a result of detailed modelling and analysis, we can provide cost effective design solutions utilising a wide range of proven techniques including scaling,  dentition,  controlled  blasting, rockbolting, shotcrete, catch areas, catch fences, berms and rocktrap walls.
