Site Investigation, Limerick Main Drainage Scheme
Site supervision of site investigation for this project which includes 1.8 km of 3.0m diameter tunnel, 10 No. shafts, 3No. crossings of the river Shannon , a 40m
diameter shaft for a pumping station, and 30 km of open cut trench excavations, up to 6.0m deep. Ground conditions ranged from alluvial clays to very strong limestone. SI included an investigation of current and
historical sources of potential contamination along the route, which indicated the presence of a disused gas works and coal yard, an abandoned landfill site, and a number of petrol stations and oil depots. Soil gas and water
samples were recovered for laboratory analysis.Mount St. Helens National Volcanic Monument, Washington, USA Site Investigation, slope stability analysis and rock-cut design. Assessment of rockfall hazards, dimensioning
of rock-traps and benches for State Route 504 (Spirit Lake Memorial Highway) - a new route to replace the road destroyed during the 1980 eruption of Mt. St. Helens. Chemical Plant, Avonmouth Design and supervision of
site investigation for installation of services to a chemical reprocessing works. Work included collected samples of contaminated soil and water from boreholes, test pits and drainage ditches within the works for chemical
analysis. Prepared procedures for the handling and disposal of contaminated material, for incorporation in the Construction H&S File.
Rainham Marshes, Essex Supervision of site investigation for a
proposed factory, adjacent to a disused gas works near the River Thames. Investigation involved geochemical sampling and installation of a system for gas and water monitoring. Interviews of local residents revealed the
location of a plague pit on the site, which was delineated for subsequent investigation.
Albright & Wilson Ltd, Avonmouth Design and supervision of site investigation for a new effluent pipeline for a chemical
works. Work included borehole sampling of contaminated soil and water, and scheduling of tests for organophosphates and pesticides. Prepared construction specifications and Health and Safety Plan incorporating
procedures for the handling and disposal of contaminated materials.
Dunlaoghaire Drainage Scheme, Republic of Ireland. Excavation of shaft and section of tunnel through a disused gasworks, encountering
a brick lined tar pit. Responsible for monitoring air-quality in a confined space, collection of samples for analysis and advice on handling and disposal of contaminated soil and water.
Napton Industrial Estate, Warwickshire Investigation and design for a proposed industrial estate in a disused brickworks. Work included identification, mapping and quantification of contaminated ground and hazardous
materials on the site including asbestos and asbestos cement products; kiln wastes; diesel storage tanks and diesel contaminated soil; and areas of unauthorised tipping. A detailed inventory of materials requiring off-site
disposal was incorporated in the Bill of Quantities for the project.
Albright and Wilson Phosphate Plant, Avonmouth Investigation of corrosion of concrete and steel reinforcement resulting from chemical spillage
and leakage within a chemical works. Work involved drilling and sampling of contaminated concrete and soil, detection and mapping of subsurface voids, and investigation of contaminated fluids below the structure.
Operations were carried out under strictly controlled conditions in an area with a high explosion hazard.
Kettlemen Hill Facility, California Supervision of investigation and clean-up of toxic waste spillages
within a large landfill complex. Contaminated soil was identified, excavated, and removed to a controlled area. |
