SubTerra Engineering is a geotechnical consultantancy, offering a broad range of geotechnical  services for the investigation, assessment, and  remediation of hazards associated with abandoned underground mine workings.

Services include;

Mine and Public Records Research

Abandoned mine record research, mine plan scanning/digitising for incorporation into GIS systems. Historical aerial photograph interpretation, and personnel interviews.

Superimposing plans and records on to surface and topographic maps for presentation in 2-D or 3D.

Site Investigation
Geological, geotechnical, geomorphological and hydrogeological data collection and interpretation.

Design, supervision and reporting  of site  investigations to determine  the extent of abandoned workings and roof stability, using probe drilling, rotary coring, borehole logging, CCTV surveys, and laser profile surveys to build a 3-D image of the void.

With our associated geophysical consultancy we can undertake the rapid assessment of large areas of ground using a wide range of geophysical methods to detect underground workings or voids. Underground surveying.

Stability Assessment
Stability analyses of the roof and sidewalls using probabilistic techniques to allow for uncertainty in rock properties and mining dimensions.

Determination of factors of safety on stability of abandoned Room and Pillar workings using Voussoir beam analysis and rock mass strength based methods.

Crown pillar stability using rock mass classification (e.g., "Q") systems and Finite Element/Boundary Element modelling.

Subsidence Prediction

Mine subsidence prediction for new, existing and abandoned mines.

Evaluation of sinkhole potential based on empirical data and analysis.

Prediction/estimation of remaining void height using probabilistic methods or direct site investigation.

Evaluation of the potential for trough subsidence and prediction of the magnitude of subsidence and associated tilts and strains..

Surface Subsidence Related Damage Evaluation
Our experience in active and abandoned mine subsidence includes the evaluation, prediction and real time monitoring of subsidence affecting; commercial and residential property, roads and railways, surface and underground utilities, landfills, and natural features (rivers, cliffs, aquifers etc).

Mine Abandonment or Remediation
Design of cost effective mine backfilling and stabilization measures, and closure designs for shafts, declines and adits.

Evaluation of venting and drainage requirements
